Written by Tabitha Ray    Monday, 21 September 2009 20:19    PDF Print E-mail

"You don't stop playing because you get old, you get old because you stop playing."

Play Date™ is an alternative to the everyday club scene. The concept was developed to bring interesting diverse groups of people together to interact on a social setting based on playing games. Play Date gives you the opportunity to simply allow yourself to have fun and interact with those who have the same goal.

Our venues are comfortable and provide a warm and friendly atmosphere. We feature a variety of music accented by delicious food and cocktails. The rooms are filled with laughter, competition, and camaraderie.

The tables (or stations) are spread throughout the venue with a variety of games to suit any interest. The games of choice come from a wide range of classics like:

Dominoes, card games (Spades, Bid Whist, Poker), Scrabble, UNO, Chess, Checkers, Perfection, Trouble, Pictionary, Yahtzee, Backgammon, Taboo, Operation, Chutes and Ladders, Scattergories, Simon, Hungry Hungry Hippos, Battleship, Connect Four, Twister, Rock'emSock'em Robots, Jenga, Monopoly, Sorry, and more. We even feature games like Jacks, Pac-Man, and Musical Chairs for true nostalgia.

The guests vary in age, ethnicity, profession, and social background yet the games provide an avenue for strangers to become acquainted without the usual awkwardness associated with meeting someone new. The casual environment creates an atmosphere conducive to mingling, meeting, networking, and relaxing.

Bradley Byrne Wins St. Clair County Straw Poll
Written by admin    Thursday, 27 August 2009 05:20    PDF Print E-mail

Candidate calls the early win in St. Clair County a "springboard for the future"

Montgomery - Gubernatorial candidate Bradley Byrne was declared the winner of the St. Clair County Republican Party Straw Poll, which was conducted last week following a well-attended Republican Gubernatorial Forum at St. Clair County High School.  The Forum, which attracted a crowd of several hundred, featured all six of the Republican candidates who have formally entered Alabama's 2010 race for Governor.

The final results, announced by party officials during the St. Clair County Republican Party's monthly meeting Thursday, indicated strong support for Byrne, who outpaced his nearest competitors nearly two to one. The final tally from the straw poll, which was the first such balloting process of the 2010 election season, showed Bradley Byrne the clear victor with 40 percent of the vote. Candidates Roy Moore and Tim James trailed Byrne at 21 percent each, followed by Robert Bentley with 14%, Bill Johnson with 3% and Kay Ivey with 1%.

"I sincerely thank all those who attended this key event and have committed themselves to working for Republican victories up and down the ballot in 2010," Byrne said when hearing of the straw poll win. "We'll use this victory as a springboard to the future - always looking forward and never backing down."

Byrne's decisive St. Clair County victory came despite the fact that his name has never appeared on a primary ballot in that county, which is located just east of Jefferson County in North Central Alabama. Three of the other declared candidates have campaigned and appeared on primary ballots in St. Clair County in at least one previous election cycle.

"We're just getting started and there's a long road ahead," Byrne said.  "But tonight's announcement is truly energizing because it's a great example of what we're finding in our travels all across the state -- Alabamians are looking for proven and tested conservative leadership in 2010; and our unyielding commitment to the 'Three E's:  Ethics, Education and Economic Development' is striking a chord with our Republican base."

Written by admin    Thursday, 27 August 2009 04:33    PDF Print E-mail

The Montgomery Area Zoological Society and Mrs. Rita Sabel proudly announce sponsorship of Zoobilation 2009 at the Montgomery Zoo.  Mrs. Sabel is generously continuing a long tradition started by her and her husband, the late Mark Sabel, as a Diamond Sponsor of Zoobilation 2009.

Mrs. Sabel, and her husband Mr. Mark Sabel’s, generosity to the Zoo is not new.  During a Board meeting in Old Alabama Town with then Mayor Emory Folmar, Mr. Mark Sabel discussed a major fund raising endeavor to buy the land where the Montgomery Zoo is now located.  Mr. Sabel directed the Capital Campaign for the “New Zoo”.  Unfortunately, before the Grand Opening, Mr. Sabel passed away.  Rita Sabel and her family have continued to be generous supporters over the past 20 years and have aided in the construction of the Overlook Café, the African Elephant habitat and barn, as well as, the new North American River Otter exhibit.

Zoobilation 2009 will be held October 8, beginning at 6:30pm at the Montgomery Zoo.  Join hundreds of River Region citizens and Zoo lovers for a wonderful evening of delectable food and drinks from the area’s finest restaurants and caterers.  The evening will include live entertainment, dancing under the stars, as well as, live and silent auctions.  And that sound you hear, might just be the roar of a lion or pachyderm partying nearby.

Zoobilation 2009 is an adult only party/fundraiser.  All attendees must be 21 years of age or older to attend the event.  Admission is $50.00 per person.  Tickets may be purchased online at ZoobilationOnline.com or at our several ticket outlets; including the Montgomery Zoo, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Eastdale Mall guest information, Montgomery’s Visitor’s Center at Union Station and the City of Prattville Mayor’s Office.
Zoobilation 2009 is hosted in part by the Montgomery Area Zoological Society.  All proceeds raised during this event will be contributed to the enhancements to the new North American Alligator exhibit.

For more information, please refer to ZoobilationOnline.com, montgomeryzoo.com or contact the Zoo at (334) 240-4900.

MPS Schools Increase to 98% of AYP Goals

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 3, 2009

MPS Schools Increase to 98% of AYP Goals

Montgomery, Ala. – Fifty-two of Montgomery’s 57 public schools made Adequate Yearly Progress, according to information provided Monday by the Alabama Department of Education. The designation is based on schools meeting 100% of their goals for the year in a variety of areas ranging from testing standards to student attendance. The number of goals for MPS schools this year ranged from five to 25, depending on the number of demographic subgroups in each school. The number of goals assigned to each school can change from year to year.

“We met 98% of our goals and the district made AYP – that is very exciting,” said Montgomery Superintendent Barbara W. Thompson. “I am especially encouraged by the efforts that were made in our traditional high schools with Carver, Jeff Davis, and Lanier all meeting 100 percent of their goals this year.”

While Robert E. Lee did not make AYP, the school continued to improve by reaching 16 of 21 goals. Chisholm Elementary, Brewbaker Intermediate, Goodwyn Junior High, Bellingrath Junior High, Houston Hill Junior High and Southlawn Middle Schools reached all their AYP goals for the second year and are no longer in school improvement.

“We have much to celebrate,” said MPS Board President Beverly Ross. “In 2004, only 11 schools – just 19% – made AYP. This year, 52 schools – 91% – hit their mark. We’ve moved from making just 48% of our goals to 98%. I am very proud of our teachers, administrators and support staff.”

The five schools that did not make AYP are: The Children’s Center, Fews Alternative School, Hayneville Road Elementary, Robert E. Lee High School, and McIntyre Junior High School.

“It would be a mistake to categorize those schools that didn’t make AYP as failures,” added Superintendent Thompson. “Each school can have up to 25 goals, and if you only miss one, you don’t make AYP. We will carefully analyze the data and develop strategies for every school to move forward. We won’t be satisfied until every MPS school makes AYP.”
